Episode Transcript

Andy Coulson:                   [0:00:01] Hello. I’m Andy Coulson and welcome back to Crisis What Crisis and another Crisis Comforts episode. Short but perfectly formed advice for getting you through the tough times.

As regular listeners will know, at the end of our conversations we ask all our guests for their three Crisis Comforts, their go-tos for inspiration and strength during the challenging times. And over the years we have accumulated some incredibly interesting, much more importantly useful tips for anyone who might be feeling the weight of their own problems.

I’ve just had a conversation with Sajid Javid, former Home Secretary, former Health Secretary among other roles, a conversation about politics, about crisis both from a personal and from a professional point of view. It’s a revealing and very frank, honest conversation, and I’d encourage you to listen to his full episode.

But if you’re short on time, here is a taster. And remember, you can also listen to all our conversations in full wherever you get your podcasts. You can follow us on Instagram and TikTok, just go to the top of our home page at www.crisiswhat crisis.com for links. Many thanks for listening.

[1:14:13] Before you go, I’m going to ask you for your Crisis Comforts, three things that you lean on during those difficult moments that you’ve had. Can’t be another person, is the only rule.

Sajid Javid:                        [0:01:16] Can’t be another person, alright.

Andy Coulson:                   [0:01:17] What would the first one be?

Sajid Javid:                        [0:01:18] Okay, alright, I’m really giving it away now. I like the occasional cigar, right? So it would unfortunately, well it would definitely be a crisis comfort, so that would be one.

Andy Coulson:                   [0:01:36] A particular brand?

Sajid Javid:                        [0:01:40] Yes, Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2. Now, if you know what that is I’ll be impressed.

Andy Coulson:                   [0:01:46] I don’t.

Sajid Javid:                        [0:01:48] It’s probably good that you don’t.

Also, for some reason when I’ve had- like where you talked about when I resigned as Chancellor, also then later when I resigned as Health Secretary, I ended up having Five Guys with a few friends, a Five Guys meal. And I think it’s probably because I find it some kind of sort of comfort food, and you know, some go-to food or something.

Andy Coulson:                   [0:02:16] Superb. Do you remember what you had?

Sajid Javid:                        [0:02:18] Yes, it’s always just a cheeseburger and some fries. It’s nothing particularly special, but just what they are good at. But it’s comfort food, I guess.

And then the third thing. If I watch a good movie, especially science fiction, no matter what else is going on in my life, what’s going on around me, the biggest crisis, whatever, I do find I can switch off and just for that moment, for those two hours or something, just get drawn into this movie and not think about anything else. Obviously as soon as the movie is finished I’m back to where I was, but-

Andy Coulson:                   [0:02:54] Have you got a go-to film? If there’s one that-

Sajid Javid:                        [0:02:57] There’s not one particular film, but I’ve said before I’m a big fan of Star Wars movies, and so that would be it. But even if some brand new film, science fiction- I would just try and watch- movies, that helps me switch off.

Andy Coulson:                   [0:03:13] Very good. Sajid Javid, thank you so much for joining us today.

Sajid Javid:                        [0:03:16] Good thank you very much.
